School’s Information Theory Test |
How do I
apply for a Theory or Practical Driving Test?
Where
can I take my Driving Test?
Which
car will I be taking my Test in?
Who is
my Examiner likely to be?
Which manoeuvres will I have to do?
What
will cause me to fail my Test?
If I fail how soon after can I retake the Test?
Where is my nearest Test Centre?
The easiest way is to telephone 08700-101372.
This is the number for the Driving Standards Agency’s booking office. You will
need a Credit/Debit card. The alternative is to complete and send off an
Application Form that can be obtained from your local Test Centre. If there are
none on display press the bell push for the Driving Examiners and ask one of
them. Remember to take the advice of your Instructor about your readiness to
take the Test. He/she may refuse to allow you to use his/her car for the Test
if you are not up to Test standard.
The
decision regarding where your Test should be taken is up to you and your
Instructor. If your local Test Centre has a long waiting list you may find that
another Centre can fit you in sooner. The choice should be made reasonably
early because you will need to familiarize yourself with the roads in the area
in which you will be taking the test. Be aware that if you take your test in an
area that is further away than your local area the fee for your instructor will
increase because of the extra time it will take to get there and back!
How much will it cost?

THE
CHOICE OF CAR IS YOURS. However, generally pupils will choose to take the car in which they
have been learning, usually the instructor’s car. Because the test is not a
lesson as such, the fee charged by the instructor is strictly termed a “Car
Hire Fee”.
No one
knows! A list of candidates is faxed to the Test Centre and it is only then
that an Examiner is chosen. Not even your Instructor knows before hand unless
there is only one Examiner at your Test Centre.
There are a
total of four manoeuvres. You will be required to perform TWO of them. The
choice is the Examiner’s. You may also be asked to carry out an ‘emergency
stop’. This is no longer a required part of the test and there is approximately
a one in three chance of you having to do it. It is sensible therefore to
ensure that you have a thorough knowledge of what is required in order to
perform each and every manoeuvre successfully.
As things
stand at the moment you can commit 15 “Minor Faults” during your test and still
be successful. A minor fault is one that is neither potentially nor actually
dangerous. Therefore failing to do a mirror check before you brake could be a
“Minor Fault” if no one is behind you but could be a “Serious” or “Dangerous”
fault if a person behind you is inconvenienced or endangered by your braking.
One “Serious” or “Dangerous” fault will result in you failing your test, as
will more than 15 “Minor Faults”. All faults are represented on the test form
as a stroke (/). Serious faults are represented by a stroke in a column on the
Test Report Form headed ‘S’ and Dangerous Faults is represented as a stroke in
a column headed ‘D’. In the event that you prove to be a danger to the public
during your test the Examiner is empowered to abandon the test. You will be
asked to stop the car and to wait where you are until your instructor comes to
collect you. This course of action is rarely taken but if it happens you must
not attempt to drive the car by yourself. Wait for your instructor!!
You can apply immediately for a re-test, but you cannot book another
test for a date sooner than 10 working days (14 days including weekends) after
the failed test.
