THE COCKPIT DRILL

The Cockpit Drill is designed to put you in the correct and most comfortable position for safe driving and to ensure that the car is safe before you start the engine. There are seven items that must be checked whenever you get into a car and you should endeavour to check them in the order in which I have listed them.

1. HANDBRAKE Check that it is fully applied by lifting the handle

2. GEAR LEVER Ensure "neutral" is selected

3. DOORS Check that they are closed

4. SEAT Adjust for clutch reach - knee slightly bent

5. STEERING Adjust for reach - elbows slightly bent

6. SEAT BELT On and Tested - pull sharply forwards

7. MIRRORS Adjust for maximum vision

When all these check have been done you are ready to start the car!
